PROFILE   

Nahoko Kojima is originally from Hyogo in Japan, and an Alumna of Kuwasawa Design in Tokyo. She has been residing in the UK since 2006 and is spearheading hand-made Japanese Papercut Art in the UK and fast becoming one of the leaders in her discipline internationally. She started practicing hand-made Japanese Papercut in 1987 and has honed her skill to perfection. Being a lover of Design she Co-founded Solo & Kojima with the intention of making a place where her Art and Design were unified and applied to real world problems.

Shari Solo is a British Director Designer and an Alumnus of Kingston University, London. He is an award winning Typographer and Strategist, published numerous times in Design Journals and with an eye for detail and colour. Before Co-founding Solo & Kojima in London, he headed Mule Industry, a Company that specialised in Moving Image and helped Brands in UK, LA and Germany.

Duke handles front of house and security. However, being a pug, most of the day he is fast asleep or polishing the floor with his tongue.

Description:
Nahoko Kojima will show you how to create her beautiful Paper Cut artworks in a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere. All levels welcome.

The cost of the ticket includes paper and the loan of equipment. A special workshop design for cutting will be provided (not shown here). If you want to cut your own then bring along a small design and photocopy. Please also bring a pen and an A4 plastic sleeve or choice of frame to transport your work.

When you sign up below, enter your experience level at the checkout so that Nahoko can tailor the class for you. Please also note that anyone under 16 will need a parent or guardian to accompany them and sign the workshop form before starting the class. Refreshments will be provided.

Come and visit us at our Summer Open Studio 2013 which starts with a Private View at 5pm on 16 May until 19 May. We are also going to be part of Clerkenwell Design Week and are looking forward to seeing the thousands of people that enter our doors during that weekend to come and see the cutting edge of Paper Cut Art in Europe today.

We have also been invited to show our groundbreaking Cloud Leopard Paper Cut Sculpture in the new Craft Central Gallery, one year on after it was unveiled at the Saatchi Gallery in Collect 2012. The Leopard was especially flown from Paris to London as an additional stop in his European Tour currently under way. This is a very rare opportunity to see the piece which represents a new genre of Contemporary Paper Cut Sculpture in the world today. The Show of the Cloud Leopard runs from 2–23 May 2013, 11-5pm weekdays (Open Studio hours from 16-19 May 2013).

Nahoko Kojima wins the prestigious Jerwood Makers Open 2013

Solo & Kojima are proud to start the year 2013 with a massive victory. Nahoko Kojima has won the prestigious Contemporary Art Award, the Jerwood Makers Open 2013. She is part of a select group of the five best contemporary artists in the UK today. The award “recognises rising stars in the world of applied arts.” and the judging panel included Edward Barber, David Falkner and Bonnie Kemske.

The new piece to be unveiled at the Jerwood Makers Open 2013 is entitled, Byaku, a Japanese word meaning White in English. It shall depict a life size swimming Polar Bear, hand cut using only one sheet of white Japanese Washi Paper and suspended as a free hanging sculpture.

Nahoko Kojima has been commissioned to create her new sculptural papercut piece following the hugely successful Cloud Leopard which was unveiled at Saatchi Collect earlier this May and is now on a touring exhibition in Europe in partnership with Arte&Arte, Italy.

In 2012 Solo & Kojima secured a major new Account with SPI Direct Entry, the UK partners of Swiss Post, to create a Brand Activation for their shiny new product which allows people to post their digital photos anywhere in the world using a friendly App and Website.

Today we proudly launch the product in the US and can finally release some of the work here. Solo & Kojima worked across the board, from brainstorming names for the product and creating Brand guidelines, design of the App, Social Media, Graphic Design and Identity, design of the website, and we even concepted, directed and produced a strong Brandfilm for the launch.

We actually really love the product too and know it is going to be the next big thing in 2013.
